Dear Fellow Oakwoodites and Friends:

I would like to encourage you to keep faith with Oak-
wood as it strives to attain the footing it needs to ensure
its long-term viability in its second hundred years. Oak-
wood has experienced hostility, disasters, disappoint-
ments and numerous other forms of discouragement. However, the many storms
of adversity which assailed her during her first hundred years, were not successful
in quenching the flame of her mission - to educate God's special children to be-
come a credit to His work and a contributing resource to the world.

Oakwood has also enjoyed multiplied occasions of advancement and growth. Our
enrolment has grown from less than twenty to a record high of over 1,400. Our
land acquisitions have grown from 360 acres to a quantum leap of 1,360 acres just
a few years ago. we can boast of 1,100 acres of prime land. We have also been
encouraged by a growing support base, of which we are a vital part.

Consequently, I wish to implore you again to keep faith with Oakwood. Our fu-
ture forecast looks great and we look forward to celebrating our centennial year -
1996, and stepping confidently across the threshold of beginning our second cen-
tury of service

Your humble servant,

James Diehard Doggette
Divine Worship Speaker

I In September 5, 1959, in Santa Monica, California,

^■^ James Richard Doggette was born, the third of five

children, to Elder and Mrs. Jackson M. Doggette, Sr. From

his earliest years, he idolized his father and insisted that one day he would be a preacher

just like his dad.

A product of Christian Education, Dr. Doggette received a Bachelor of Arts degree in
Theology from Oakwood College, and a Master of Divinity degree from Andrews Univer-
sity. In 1992, he received a Doctor of Ministry degree from the School of Theology at
Claremont. His Professional Project was entitled "EMOTION AND RATIONALITY IN
AFRICAN AMERICAN SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST WORSHIP."

During Dr. Doggette's ministerial career, he has served as the pastor of the Valley Fellow-
ship SDA Church in Rialto, California; the associate pastor of the 31st. Street SDA
Church in San Diego, California; pastor of the Northside SDA Church in Pine Bluff, Ari-
zona; pastor of the Cedar Grove SDA Church in Shreveport, Louisiana. Currently, he is
serving as the pastor of the Southeast SDA Church in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Doggette is a
third-generation clergyman.

While his awards include the Mosley/Warren Homiletics Award and Pacific Union Re-
gional Co-Pastor of the Year Award, he is most proud of his family - wife, former La-
Shunn Lee; sons, Shawn, James, Austin and Milton.

Dr. Doggette prays that his life will reflect his ardent belief in his favorite text, which reads:
"...for God resisteth the proud, andgiveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves
therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time,
Casting all your care upon Him; for he careth for you. " 1 Peter 5 :5-7

Y outh Divine Worship Speaker

Abraham Julius Jules

f^L braham Julius Jules is a native of the Caribbean island of
*■ ^ Trinidad, where he received his early formal education. Born
into a fourth-generation Seventh-day Adventist family, Pastor Jules always felt called to the
Gospel Ministry, and made the decision to accept God's call early in life. Soon after he
migrated to the United States of America with his family as a teenager he purposed in his
heart to pursue his goal of becoming a minister, going first to Oakwood College in 1979
where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theology and a Bachelor of Arts degree in
Business Administration.

Upon graduation from Oakwood College in 1983, Pastor Jules accepted a call from the
Northeastern Conference to pastor the New Life SDA Church in Brooklyn, New York.
Immediately the small group began to benefit from the zeal, enthusiasm and vision of the
pastor. Early showing unambiguous signs that God had richly blessed him with, among
other things, the gift of evangelism, Pastor Jules conducted a successful evangelistic
campaign in the summer of 1984, baptizing 60 precious souls into the remnant family of
believers. During those years, Pastor Jules received invaluable instruction and inspiration
from his senior pastor, Dr. R. Clifford Jones.

Graduating from Andrews University in 1987 with a Master of Divinity degree, Pastor
Jules took up responsibilities at the New Hope Church in Harlem, New York City. In the 4
years that he pastored there, the congregation was transformed from a small, fledgling
group into a vibrant, thriving Christian community. Today New Hope boasts a membership
of well over 300, reached in part as the result of an evangelistic crusade Pastor Jules held in
1988 which netted 101 souls.

Although sought after as a speaker at home and abroad, Pastor Jules finds time to conduct
Lay Bible Instructors Training Classes around the conference. In 1989 he was honored for
his outstanding service and leadership with the coveted "Pastor of the Year Award." In
1991 Pastor Jules was ordained in the largest ordination service held in the history of
Northeastern Conference. Currently, he serves on several denominational boards including
the Northeastern Executive Committee.

Presently he pastors the Kingsboro Temple in Brooklyn,New York. Since its inception
following the Breath of Life Crusade in the summer of 1991, Kingsboro Temple under
Pastor Jules has blossomed into a premier SDA Church in the New York metropolitan are
and a magnet that attracts worshippers from across the tri-state region.

Myrna Baker McClain

My parents were Richard and Lucille
Lawrence. I am next to the oldest of
eleven children, born in Detroit, Michigan, and
have lived in Michigan most of my life. My
elementary education was in seventh-day
Adventist schools, while my secondary was in public school which included
Battle Creek, Michigan.

After graduating from high school in Marshall, Michigan, I went immediately to Oakwood
junior College to prepare to become a teacher. My College work was completed at
Andrews University with a Bachelors of science degree in elementary education. I have
done graduate work at Michigan State University and Western Michigan University.

The years of church school teaching were: one year in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; three years
in South Bend, Indiana and four years in Cassopolis, Michigan. All grade levels were
included in this teaching experience. For twenty-nine and one half years I taught for the
public schools of Michigan, most of which was in the Language, Arts (English, Reading
and Spelling). I retired after a total of thirty-seven and one half years.

I met and married George A. Baker in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and to this union we were
blessed with two daughters and three sons, all of whom attended church school, high
school or academy. Three of them attended Oakwood College. My daughters are Myrna
Baker Hunt and Karen Baker Alford of Niles Michigan; and my sons are Edward Baker of
Tyler, Texas and George and Gregory Baker of Dallas, Texas. I have two grandsons who
are/have attended Oakwood College, Carlin Alford and Todd Hunt.

Recognition for outstanding achievement was given during my teaching career which
included nomination for "Teacher of the Year" for the Niles Public Schools. I have held the
office of treasurer of the Michigan Chapter of the Oakwood College Alumni Association

Alma 51ackmon

"Ibi it

I ames Montgomery used to sit 6-ycar old
^■^ Alma on the piano bench in their
Washington, DC home. He always conducted
the piano lessons in grand gestures and
insisted on proper phrasing and dynamics for
the most simple, one-fingered songs.

Alma Blackmon has never forgotten the discipline her

father drilled into her. She also remembers that he

left a job with the Little Symphony as a bass violinist to commit himself full time to the

Seventh-day Advcntist lifestyle.

That discipline, musicianship and commitment surfaced repeatedly in Blackmon's life.
With those traits, she fostered goodwill toward Oakwood College and contributed to the
solid musical tradition of the Black seventh-day Advcntist Church. For that, MESSAGE
Magazine presents Dr. Alma Blackmon with its 1993 MESSAGE Excellence Award.

After attending Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, Blackmon studied early childhood
education at what is now the University of the District of Columbia. She earned her Bache-
lor's and Master's degrees and started teaching first grade andjater, kindergarten. By the
time she retired thirty years later, in 1973, she was supervisor for all the kindergarten
classes in the school system.

In spite of her teaching background, Blackmon's friends and family always remember her
musical gifts. By the time she was 10 she was playing organ for church, and as a teenager
she and her cousin, Betty Gillis, played piano duets. As an adult, Blackmon
sang, accompanied and directed choirs at the Dupont Park Seventh-day Adventist Church.
And audiences at the operative Georgetown dinner theater, The Tivoli, listened enrap-
tured as she accompanied local singers, among them Joyce Bryant.

But that break-neck social life slowed in 1972 after a second deadly bout with and miracu-
lous cure of cancer. She re-dedicated her life and talents to God. "He has my complete
time " she says. "I don't have an agenda, except for things that contribute to His cause."

Shortly thereafter Blackmon visited Oakwood to play in a concert, and friends urged her to
apply for a position. After some praying and thoughtful consideration, she and her college
freshman daughter, Brenda, left for Oakwood.

National Alumni Association

OAKWOOD COLLEGE =

Once there, Blackmon taught in both the English and Music departments, but reviving the
defunct Aeolians caused the biggest stir on Oakwood's campus.

"She was the esprit de corps," says Calvin B. Rock, Oakwood's president at the time. With
their perfect tones, proud and mournful spirituals and Christian discipline, the choir natu-
rally recruited students.

"She brought a lot of spirit, a lot of life. She was able to introduce a sound that was musi-
cally correct and yet interesting and tasteful for her audience and young people."

"It was through the Aeolians that Blackmon's students encountered the tight discipline she
inherited from her father," recalls Ricky Little, the groups current director. He remembers
the rehearsals when a choir member used to slip in a side door and crawl through the bass
and alto sections just to sneak into her chair unnoticed. "Anyone who came late was afraid
to come in," says Little.

Blackmon also influenced her students' lives as a friend, supporter and motivator, recalls
Wintley Phipps, one of her former voice students. "The lessons would be peppered with
counsel," says Phipps, "For me, it was counsel that was life-changing."

As a good listener and sounding board, her students trusted her to pray for them, relished
her encouragement, even her admonition. "She didn't ask to be called Ma Blackmon," says
Clara rock, Blackmon's godsister. "That was the way people felt."

"She is giving," says music educator and longtime friend, Edward Jackson. "She'd empty her
pocketbook, her heart or her refrigerator."

Aside from 430 of her former Aeolians and the many friends who think of Blackmon as
family, she really has her own. Along with working with Opus I, her choir based out of At-
lanta's Berean SDA Church, she lovingly tends to her daughter, Brenda Blackmon Wood,
her son-in-law, Keith Wood and her two granddaughters, Kristen and Kandis.

Considering the 20-year anniversary since her second healing, and the beginning of the
Aeolians, Blackmon still marvels at her blessings. "I guess the biggest thrill I know is the
fact that God would give me more time. I enjoy my life; it's just a pleasure.

Soon Cleveland welcomed new worshippers who wanted to learn truth. They left their con-
gregations and told their bosses they wouldn't be in on Saturdays anymore. He baptized
five hundred people during the meetings.

With an unheard of two thousand attendees nightly, Cleveland worried local religious
leadership, says Charles E. Dudley, an associate in the effort. Subsequently, two of Mont-
gomery's prominent ministers, Dr.Martin Luther King, Jr., and Rev. Ralph Abernathy paid
them a visit. "They told us we were using mass hypnotism," Dudley recalls.

Ironically, this past February, Morehouse College inducted Cleveland into the Martin
Luther King Jr. Board of Preachers - a hall of fame for Black preachers.

MESSAGE Magazine also salutes Cleveland's dedication to Christian service and witness
with its 1993 MESSAGE Excellence Award. We are sure, as he has always been, of the
God-given direction, power and truth that has fueled his ministry.

To date, more than 13,00 people have come to know Christ because of Cleveland's evange-
lism. Of that number, he marks 15 ministers who now serve the church, including Breath of
Life evangelist, Charles D. Brooks. He also notes more than 900 workers he's trained for
evangelism all over the world. His travels to 67 countries, including Liberia, Uganda,
Japan, Australia, South Africa and Trinidad, met with the same blessings and guidance.

Of course Cleveland reminds everyone that he owes much of his success to his wife and
childhood friend, the former Celia Marie Abney. They celebrate their 50th wedding an-
niversary this May. Their friendship and oneness of purpose worked efficiently during his
tent meetings. As Cleveland's minister of music and "best' Bible worker, Celia played in the
tent's darkness each night, her musical cues and matching crescendos carried his words in a
multi-sensory message to listeners.

OAKWOOD COLLEGE =

"He would accelerate, and I would accelerate with him," remembers Celia. "He would talk
about the dry bones and start connecting them, and I went up the scale and down with him.
we did work together very well on that."

Today they still celebrate each other's company and that of their two grandsons, Edward
Earl Cleveland II and Omar Clifford Cleveland, sons of their one child, Edward Clifford
Cleveland.

from the time he was a child, Cleveland knew what he wanted to do. His father, a very ac-
tive local elder in Chattanooga, Tennessee, inspired in him a love of the evangelistic cam-
paign - the smell of sawdust, the music and the preaching. But in 1941 when Cleveland left
Oakwood College, he didn't have a job.he spent the next 11 months doing odd jobs and
going hungry.

"I look back on that as being essential to the career that Jehovah had mapped out for me,"
Cleveland says. "It is hard for a young boy who's never been hungry to talk with people
(who have) and register with them."

the preparation led the way to a career as one of the Seventh-day Adventist Church's most
successful evangelists. Cleveland spent 23 years as the associate secretary for the general
Conference Ministerial Association. While from there he helped form the Human Rela-
tions Committee and developed the inner city program, both of which brought cross-cul-
tural understanding and ministry to people of color.

Along with ten books he has already authored, Cleveland is pushing for a book that dis-
cusses Ellen G.White's views of Black Adventists, as expressed in Testimonies, Volume 9.
Cleveland has also promoted the idea of a Black hymnal that would incorporate traditional
Black American music and songs from the many countries in Africa and the West Indies.
(Quiet as it is kept, Cleveland's family knows he is capable of playing almost anything on
the piano - black keys only!).

Cleveland still promotes evangelism and training for Black people and continues to teach
at Oakwood College, helping train young ministers. However, a major challenge concerns
him. The success of the Black work, Cleveland says, carried with it the danger of compla-
cence.

"The danger that faces us is the same danger that faces anyone who is succeeding - that our
clergy lose its appetite for conquest and our congregations the zeal for people."

I n 1945, during your brother's , the late Elder John

S. Green Jr. , pastorate, you started visiting us and
joined later.

For many years you worked with the youth in A.Y.
and the Linden Choraliers.

In 1957 you represented the proposal to Sister Isabell
Bass, of the church board to start a church school.

During your ten-year tenure as chair-
man/treasurer/project chairman of the school board,
you searched constantly for a school facility and
helped to raise over $100,000 for it.

Thanks for your dedicated service and financial
support.

Who is Mrs. Dudley?

She is an instrument of the Lord's peace;
Where there has been hate,

she has brought love;
Where there has been offense,

she has brought pardon;
She has brought union in place of discord;
Trust in place of error;
Faith, where once there was doubt;
Hope, for despair;
Light, where there was darkness;
And joy to, replace sadness.
She has not so craved to be loved

as she has to love others.

We love and salute Mrs. Dudley.

I will not doubt, though sorrows fall like rain,

And troubles swarm like bees about a hive;

I will believe the heights for which I strive

Are only reached by anguish and pain

And though I groan and writhe beneath my crosses

I yet shall see through my severest losses - The greater gain,

Best Wishes Virginia Green Gibson

Delores K. Etter

GOD IS GOOD - For He has, along with you, allowed me to serve you again as the
Chairman of the OCNAA Homecoming Journal Committee for 1993.
GOD IS GOOD - For He permitted the Journal Committee to publish successfully
our 13th Homecoming Journal.

GOD IS GOOD - For He knew that Edna Lett Williamson, co-chairperson, needed to
guide and encourage me. Even though we were many miles apart, she as usual, did
more than her share in her loving and kind way (smile). He also knew that I needed
the faith and confidence of the President, Chlora Jones, who would tell me from
time to time not to worry, everything is going to be all right. Without the kindness,
understanding and patience of the printer, Clarence Crawford, and his staff in New
York, we would not have made it. Fernand "Buzzy" Washington, again designed
our cover for us.

GOD IS GOOD - For he gave the Davis Family the energy and togetherness, to support
their Mother, Viola Reid Davis, in raising the largest amount of money ever for the
Parent of the Year. The Alumna, Virginia Green Gibson, Certificate of Merit
Honorees, Denzil Bridges of Northeastern Conference and Erycina R. Webbe of
Southeastern Conference, helped to make this project a huge success.

GOD IS GOOD - BEST WISHES and CONGRATULATIONS to all of our Honorees.
We are grateful to our sponsors and patrons, for their generous support to our
honorees and the Oakwood College National Alumni Association.

GOD IS GOOD - ASANTE!
